Mindful Work

Remember: employers must assess the risks of work-related stress (https://www.hse.gov.uk/stress/risk-assessment.htm) and take action to protect employees.

Part of your strategy could be to engage a Mindfulness Teacher. When mindfulness is taught and applied within a wellbeing strategy, it reduces workplace stress. For example, from the Oxford Mindfulness Centre: https://oxfordmindfulness.org/news/mindfulness-workplace-effective-challenges/.

How will you know when people are stressed?

Individual colleagues may report they:

  • are not able to cope with the demands of their jobs;
  • are unable to control the way they do their work;
  • don’t receive enough information and support;
  • are having trouble with relationships at work, or are being bullied;
  • don’t fully understand their role and responsibilities; or
  • are not engaged when a business is undergoing change.

Signs of stress in teams

Sometimes entire teams show signs of stress:

  • frequent arguments;
  • higher staff turnover;
  • more reports of stress;
  • more sickness absence;
  • decreased performance; and
  • more complaints and grievances.

When colleagues are stressed, they:

  • take more time off;
  • arrive for work later;
  • become more twitchy or nervous;
  • have mood swings;
  • are withdrawn;
  • lose motivation, commitment and confidence; and
  • show increased emotional reactions – being more tearful, sensitive or aggressive.
